#ACC302 A PAIR OF CARVED WOOD ‘SHISHI’ (LION DOGS)

Late 19th/Early 20th Century

This pair of ‘shishi’ are carved from ‘keyaki’ (zelkova) wood, boldly sculptured with muscle, flowing manes and tails. The male with his mouth closed and the female characteristically with mouth open, signifying the cycle of birth and death.

Signed: ISHIKAWA NOBUMITSU

Male: 50cm long X 27cm high

Female: 47cm long X 23cm high.
