ACC#145. LATE 18TH /EARLY 19TH CENTURY ‘NERIKAWA ONI MEN’
Black lacquered ‘nerikawa oni men’ (molded leather mask in the form of a demon’s face) with outsized squat nose and very large, flared nostrils. Inside the broad mouth are copper snaggle teeth and fangs. On the very prominent jaw is a sharp goatee and a large boar hair moustache on the upper lip. The interior of the mask is lacquered red. Throat protection is made of five lames of black lacquered ‘kiritsuke kozane’ (false scales).
