Black lacquered ‘nerikawa’ (molded leather) ‘ressei men’ with, outland-lishly deep wrinkles over the cheeks and around the mouth. The nose is detachable. ‘Orekugi’ (bent pins) on the cheeks prevent slippage of the helmet cords. The ‘ase-nagashi-no-ana’ under the chin is in the form of an ‘inome’ (heart shape). The interior of the mask is lacquered red. The ‘tare’ (throat guard) is made of two lames of ‘honkozane’ (real scales) attached to the mask with doeskin and stenciled leather.

LATE 18TH /EARLY 19TH CENTURY
