ACC442 17TH /18TH CENTURY CARVING OF A ‘NIO’ HAND

Very large carving of the left hand of a ‘Nio’ (temple guardian), frequently seen in pairs at either side of the gates of Buddhist temples in Japan.

The wood has been cleverly carved using the wood grain to accentuate the knuckles and fingertips of the piece.

Approximate dimensions: 47cm long X 36cm wide X 33cm high.
