HLM#236 RUSSET IRON ‘OKITENUGUI SAIGA KABUTO’ (HELMET IN THE FORM OF A HEAD TOWEL)
Early 17th Century
The ‘mabisashi’ (peak) and ‘fukigaeshi’ (turn backs) are trimmed with scrolled gilded copper. ‘Kirigane’ (applied iron) eyebrows and filed diamond shapes are evident around the bowl. A small gilded wood ‘maedate’ (forecrest) in the form of a seated Buddha decorates the front of the helmet. The ‘fukigaeshi’ are pierced with a simple cherry blossom heraldry.
The ‘hineno shikoro’ (close fitting neck guard) is composed of six lames of iron plate, lacquered black on the exterior and red on the interior. Secured with ‘sugake’ (wide spaced) navy blue silk lacing.
