#ACC149 INLAID IRON ‘GUNSEN’ (WAR FAN)

Late 18th Century

This heavy iron war fan is decorated with a single dragon flying amongst clouds on both sides with silver ‘nunome zogan’ (overlay). The eyes have been inlaid with silver pins in slight relief. The flames and horns have been overlaid with gold.

The paper has been silver gilded on both sides and decorated with a red rising sun.

Such fans were used wealthy samurai as a symbol of power and for communication.

Measures approximately 55cm across
