‘JINBAORI (ARMOUR SURCOAT), ‘JINGASA’ (LIGHT HEAD PROTECTION), ‘KAJI ZUKIN’ (FIRE HOODS)

19th Century

 

This set of five pieces consists of a red ‘jinbaori’ made of ‘rasha’ (imported wool fabric), with light brown silk floral patterned lining. The centre of the upper back is decorated with a rabbit in white ‘rasha’.

A ‘jingasa’ made of rattan lacquered black with gold leaf decoration on the exterior and red lacquer on the interior.

Three ‘kaji zukin’ (fire hoods). The first is made of lacquered leather and stenciled doe skin with gilded leather ‘mabisashi’ (peak) and small ‘fukigaeshi’ (turn backs). The interior is lined with brown silk. The second is made of black and yellow ‘rasha’ with silk lining. The third is made of purple ‘rasha’ and lined with silk.

All are decorated with a sitting rabbit heraldry (clan unidentified).
