#AR279 TETSU SABIJI NURI NANBAN DOU
Late 17th Century
Russet lacquered ‘nanban dou’ (Japanese made European style cuirasse). Consisting of a breast and back plate hinged on the left side, secured with silk cord on the right. Large flat rivets adorn the top and medial ridge of the breast plate with rope-like ‘tomotetsu’ trim. A ‘saihaitsuke no kan’ (gilded copper ring) hangs on the top right side.
The back plate has a characteristic high neck and the ‘watagami’ (shoulder straps) are also made of iron with rare iron clasps to secure them.
The ‘kusazuri’ (skirt) is made of seven divisions, each of five lames of gilded leather ‘kiritsuke kozane’ (false scales).
Housed in a paulownia wood armour storage box.
